Today we intended to make it to Agua Dulce in time for breakfast, resupply in the store and then camp on the far side of town. Our plans were altered by the need for new insoles, new trekking pole tips and for me a new hiking skirt. Mine is now far too large, even with a safety pin for support.…

  • Today I remember the turning of the seasons; blazing colours, bright sunlight and crisp frosts. I fell in love with the wilds of the Pacific Northwest and would return in a heartbeat.   • It’s hard to beat autumn for early morning walks in the woods. Pick your perspective: the elegance of the cycle, leaves composting to feed the new growth of the coming year; the delicate complexity of carotenoids, anthocyanins, tannins and chlorophyll; perhaps simply a ready-made artist’s palette, enhanced by golden light; or a gentle melancholy from inevitable decay.   • Oregon gets a rough deal by comparison to California and Washington. Today I take it by itself. Lava fields so sharp they shredded my shoes. Dragon glass reflecting glints of sunlight even in the thickest forest. Valleys carved by glaciers over millennia. Glacier melt rushing down from a mountainside. Volcanoes, volcanoes everywhere.
