The Mountains of Idaho, a Solar Eclipse, and Intense Emotions

farawayflyer / September 16, 2017

I find it incredible how much the mountains can amplify emotions. Everything is intense, the highs are higher and the lows much lower. The first three days in Idaho ran the gamut. I had set out with two friends, primarily to see the solar eclipse from a beautiful location. It turned out that was the easy part. There’s a lot…

Day 72: Desolated in Desolation Wilderness

farawayflyer / July 19, 2015

I woke up this morning to learn that Chug had positively decided to join Dolittle and to leave the trail. He had been thinking about it for a while, but the idea of getting to Echo Lake where it would be possible to hitch to South Lake Tahoe had made up his mind. We broke camp quickly and hiked just…

  • I don’t see the days getting shorter as a bad thing. I love the softer light and the vibrant colours. Waterside walks, grasses and blackberries. #exetercanal #devon #lightchasing #watersidewalks
  • Today I remember the turning of the seasons; blazing colours, bright sunlight and crisp frosts. I fell in love with the wilds of the Pacific Northwest and would return in a heartbeat. This is some of the most beautiful and most remote country I’ve experienced. #hiking #pct2015 #washington #pacificnorthwest #volcanoes #northcascades #mountadams #mountrainier #mountsthelens #rainforests #turningseasons #fallcolours
  • Oregon gets a rough deal by comparison to California and Washington. Today I take it by itself. Lava fields so sharp they shredded my shoes. Dragon glass reflecting glints of sunlight even in the thickest forest. Valleys carved by glaciers over millennia. Glacier melt rushing down from a mountainside. Volcanoes, volcanoes everywhere. It’s possible to feel incredibly small yet simultaneously connected to something universal and enduring. #hiking #thruhike #pct2015 #oregon #threesisters #cascades #lavafields #obsidian #fordingglaciers #loseyourmindfindyoursoul

  • It’s hard to beat autumn for early morning walks in the woods. Pick your perspective: the elegance of the cycle, leaves composting to feed the new growth of the coming year; the delicate complexity of carotenoids, anthocyanins, tannins and chlorophyll; perhaps simply a ready-made artist’s palette, enhanced by golden light; or a gentle melancholy from inevitable decay. There’s beauty in each of them. Me? I love it all. The smell of the rain, the feel of the mud under my feet, and the chill on my face. Quieter places as more people stay home. The increasing importance of these moments
